Breakfast Coffee & Pastries at Tree Story Bakery & Cafe in Duluth, GA

This morning I woke up at a heinously early hour to accompany my boyfriend to the ATL airport.  Now I’m postponing the trip back to Athens and trying to get posts/editing done at Tree Story Bakery & Cafe.  In general, I hold off on reviewing places until I’ve been there at least twice.  This review is no exception.  Last time I dropped my boyfriend off at the airport I went here, and the quality of the coffee and pastries are still high caliber.Though the wares here at Tree Story are excellent, the best part of this cafe is the decor, no doubt about it. It has a colorful yet calming color palette, with bright walls and rich and rustic wood tables.  The burnished aluminum chairs, the exposed ceiling, and reclaimed wood accents give the place a French industrial feel.  But the place keeps itself from taking itself too seriously by adding playful accents like murals of happy forest animals, and gingerbread animals hanging from the rafters.  It’s really quite well done.

I was the first customer of the day, at least I think, as the workers/bakers were arranging fresh warm pastries and breads into display cases and bags when I walked in.  The girl at the cash register was very patient and helpful as I tried to choose enough pastries to reach the $5 debit card minimum (beware, the lemon drops at the register are $3.20).  Last time I was at Tree story I got a sweet rice donut, which was delicious and warm and crispy.  I got one again to take home to my brother, and also the sweet potato mini pastries.  For coffee, I got an espresso con panna.

The espresso was nice and rich, but a little too acrid for my taste.  And it was missing the panna! I realized that as I drained the last of it :/ The pastries, however, were delicious.  The sweet potato biscuits were excellent in particular.  The outside was crispy and flaky, with crystals of sugar dotting the golden-brown exterior.  Inside, there was a buttery, sweet-savory sweet potato filling.  It was really delicious, and only 99 cents for 4 (weekend special!)

This is a great place for a date, a bite to eat, or a study session. The location right next door to hmart is convenient for shopping or food breaks, if the small selection of sandwiches doesn’t suit you.  Next time I’m here I’ll try the assortment of cakes in the glass case- they look so pretty that they must be delicious too.  I give Tree Story 4.5/5, for overall value, decor, and really fast wifi!
